Ken Griffey Jr.’s high school coach recounts tales of The Kid

CINCINNATI – Ken Griffey Jr. was celebrated this weekend at the Great American Ballpark with both a Griffey-themed fireworks show Friday night and a bobblehead night Saturday. While he will go into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Mariner, Griffey has strong Cincinnati ties, both playing and growing up there.

While he learned most of his baseball acumen from his dad and spending time in big-league clubhouses, Griffey also made his mark on the field at Moeller High school. His head coach, Mike Cameron, retired as Moeller’s head coach in 2007 but still coaches and is one of the official scorekeepers at the Great American Ballpark. I sat down with him during the radio pregame show and enjoyed hearing about some of Junior’s earliest days on the field.
