The Seattle Mariners were in need of a spark. They got it from one of their star players.
Julio Rodríguez clubbed two homers, including a the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning, and delivered a web gem Saturday as the M’s snapped their four-game losing streak with a 10-2 win over the Atlanta Braves.
The Mariners (74-68) hold the final American League wild card berth by one game over the Kansas City Royals.
Rodríguez got his big day started early. The center fielder belted a two-run blast 421 feet with a 109.6 mph exit velocity into the seats in left field off a splitter from Braves starter Hurston Waldrep for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
It was the center fielder’s glovework that showed up next. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Rodríguez sprinted back to right and chased down hard line drive off the bat of Atlanta center fielder Michael Harris, making a leaping catch to rob his counterpart of extra bases.
To cap it off, Rodríguez sparked a two-out, seventh-inning rally with a mammoth two-run blast to center field. The three-time All-Star unloaded on a 97 mph fastball from Braves reliever Daysbel Hernández, sending it 441 feet with a 113.5 mph exit velocity for a 4-2 advantage.
Eugenio Suárez made it back-to-back homers with a solo shot in the next at bat, and J.P. Crawford added an RBI single in the four-run seventh.
Rodríguez’s two blasts on the night brought him up to 30 home runs, marking the second time he’s reached the feat in his four-year big league career. It’s the third time he’s hit multiple home runs in a game this season. He needs six more stolen bases for his second career 30-30 season.
