J.P. Crawford out of Mariners’ lineup after HBP

Veteran shortstop J.P. Crawford is out of the Seattle Mariners’ lineup for Saturday’s game against the Detroit Tigers as he gets treatment on his right hand.

Crawford exited Friday night’s 7-3 loss to Detroit after being hit in the hand on a 96 mph sinker from starting pitcher Framber Valdez in the third inning. Mariners manager Dan Wilson said after the game that X-rays were negative and Crawford is day to day.

Prior to Saturday’s game, Wilson said Crawford’s hand is doing better, but that “it’s still pretty sore.”

“We want to make sure he’s in really good shape before we get him back out there,” Wilson said. “I think he’ll be fine. He just needs another day.”

Wilson said it’s unlikely Crawford will be available off the bench Saturday, but he didn’t rule it out.

“We’ll see,” Wilson said. “It was a quick turnaround today, and him getting some treatment here during the game, we’ll see if he’s available. I kind of tend to think he’s not available, but we’ll see.”

With Crawford out, Cole Young will fill his spot atop the order. It’ll be the second time this season Young has batted leadoff.

Colt Emerson will slide over from third base to shortstop, while Patrick Wisdom will start at third base.

Right-hander Bryce Miller (1.71 ERA) is on the mound for Seattle. Right-hander Keider Montero (3.69 ERA) gets the start for Detroit.
