How M’s switch-pitching prospect Cijntje fared in Double-A debut

Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Jurrangelo Cijntje was an out away from making an impressive Double-A debut, but he still ended up with a solid outing in his first game with the Arkansas Travelers.

The switch-pitching Cijntje tossed five innings and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four against the Frisco RoughRiders, an affiliate of the Texas Rangers. He threw 82 pitches (53 strikes).

Cijntje, a 2024 first-round pick, had a chance to get through the fifth with only one run allowed, but a two-out double by Aaron Zavala plated a pair of runs. He escaped the fifth without further damage by making a solid play coming off the mound on a grounder, recovering from falling to the ground to get the out at first.

Cijntje, who predominately pitches right-handed, faced four batters as a southpaw. He struck out one left-handed, allowed a single and recorded two more outs. Zavala’s double, which came against Cijntje while pitching right-handed, was the only extra-base hit he allowed on the night.

The 22-year-old Cijntje was promoted to Double-A alongside top-ranked Mariners prospect Colt Emerson on Aug. 4. Cijntje is Seattle’s No. 8 prospect and No. 69 in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline. He is one of eight M’s farmhands in Pipeline’s top 100.

A first-round pick in 2024, Cijntje posted a 4-7 record with a 4.58 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 83 strikeouts over 74 2/3 innings in 19 appearances (16 starts) with High-A Everett before his promotion to Double-A.
