How Mariners players are faring in the World Baseball Classic

No team has been represented more at this year’s World Baseball Classic than the Seattle Mariners.

Maybe the Seattle Mariners should bring James Paxton out of retirement

The Mariners sent 17 players to the event, a number that could grow to 18 if right-hander Luis Castillo is called up from the Dominican Republic’s designated pitcher pool.

With the tournament advancing past pool play and into the quarterfinals, just eight of the 20 teams in the field are left standing, meaning several Mariners have returned to or are set to return to spring camp in the coming days. Meanwhile, at least eight M’s remain on teams who are still alive.

Thursday is an off day for the WBC before the quarterfinals begin Friday (click here for the upcoming schedule). With a break in the action, here’s a look at how all the Mariners in the event have fared.

Players on quarterfinal teams

• RHP Eduard Bazardo, Venezuela
Bazardo has allowed one run and one hit in 1 1/3 innings pitched over two appearances. He pitched a scoreless third inning to pick up a hold in Venezuela’s win over the Netherlands.

• OF Dominic Canzone, Italy
Canzone is 2 for 13 (.154 average) with a home run, four RBIs, two runs scored, two walks and three strikeouts in three games. He hit a three-run homer in Italy’s win over Brazil.

• LHP Jhonathan Díaz, Venezuela
Diaz has yet to appear in a game for Venezuela.

• RHP Dane Dunning, Korea
Dunning has struck out two and allowed two runs, three hits and one walk in 2 2/3 innings over two appearances.

• INF Miles Mastrobuoni, Italy
Mastrobuoni went 2 for 3 (.667 average) with a double, an RBI, a walk and a strikeout over two games. Both his hits came in Italy’s win over Great Britain, including an RBI double. Mastrobuoni injured his calf during WBC pool play and is heading back to Mariners camp, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Wednesday.

• 1B Josh Naylor, Canada
Naylor is 4 for 16 (.250 average) with two RBIs, two walks and three strikeouts over four games. He had an RBI single to help Canada beat Cuba and clinch its first-ever quarterfinal appearance.

• C Cal Raleigh, USA
Raleigh is 0 for 6 with an RBI, three runs scored, three walks and three strikeouts over two games. He walked three times and scored twice in the USA’s win over Brazil.

• Julio Rodríguez, Dominican Republic
Rodríguez is 3 for 11 (.273 average) with a home run, three RBIs, two runs scored, two walks and three strikeouts over three games. Rodríguez hit a solo homer and had all three of his RBIs in the Dominican Republic’s win over Nicaragua.

• LHP Gabe Speier, USA
Speier has struck out two and allowed one run and one hit in two innings over two appearances. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning in the USA’s loss to Italy, which included getting Canzone to ground out to second base.

Players on eliminated teams

• Randy Arozarena, Mexico
Arozarena went 2 for 13 (.154 average) with a double, an RBI, three runs scored, three walks and five strikeouts in four games. He also had an outfield assist that saved a run in Mexico’s win over Great Britain.

• INF/OF Michael Arroyo, Colombia
Arroyo went 4 for 13 (.308 average) with an RBI, four runs scored, two stolen bases, three walks and three strikeouts over four games. He reached base in all four contests.

• RHP Charlie Beilenson, Israel
Beilenson struck out two, walked two and allowed one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings over two appearances.

• RHP Pedro Da Costa Lemos, Brazil
Da Costa Lemos did not appear in a game.

• RHP Abdiel Mendoza, Panama
Mendonza struck out one and allowed a walk during a scoreless inning in Panama’s loss to Cuba.

• RHP Andrés Muñoz, Mexico
Muñoz struck out two and allowed one run, two hits and two walks in two innings over two appearances.

• RHP Dylan Wilson, Netherlands
Wilson pitched a scoreless inning and allowed one walk in the Netherlands’ loss to the Dominican Republic.

• RHP Guillo Zuñiga, Colombia
Zuñiga allowed four runs, five hits and a walk in one inning over two appearances.
