Hisashi Iwakuma named AL Player of the Week; Mariners recall reliever Edgar Olmos

Hisashi Iwakuma was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday after his no-hitter in a 3-0 Mariners win over the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 12.

It is the first Player of the Week honor in Iwakuma’s MLB career.

In the no-hitter, Iwakuma’s lone start last week, he struck out seven and walked three on 116 pitches. The outing lowered his ERA to 3.86 for the season, and he is now 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 44 strikeouts since July 11.

Iwakuma, who missed two months earlier this season with a lat injury, is the third Mariners player to be named Player of the Week in 2015, joining shortstop/outfielder Brad Miller (May 18) and outfielder Nelson Cruz (April 20).

In other Mariners news, they have recalled left-handed relief pitcher Edgar Olmos from Triple-A Tacoma and optioned fellow southpaw reliever Rob Rasmussen to the Rainiers. Seattle is in need of pitching after exhausting its bullpen in a three-game weekend series with the Boston Red Sox where they allowed a combined 45 runs on 60 hits.

This is Olmos’ first call-up with the Mariners. The 25 year old pitched in five games with the Miami Marlins in 2013, posting a 7.20 ERA and two strikeouts over five innings. In 20 games (two starts) with Tacoma this season, he is 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA and one save.

Rasmussen, 26, went 2-1 with a 16.20 ERA in eight games with the Mariners since joining the team via trade on July 31. He pitched in all three games of the Boston series.
