Hello, my name is: Shawn O’Malley, Mariners utility man

A look at Mariners hopeful Shawn O'Malley, a local product trying to make the team as a non-roster invitee to spring training.

We’re introducing some of the Mariners’ offseason additions and lesser-known players during spring training. Here’s a look at Shawn O’Malley.

• Position: Outfield/shortstop/second base
• Height/weight/age: 5-11/175/27
• Hometown: Kennewick, Wash.
• How acquired: Signed to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training on Jan. 22, 2015.

What people don’t know about his hometown: The former Southridge High School star is used to people thinking he grew up in a damp, forested area when they hear he’s from Washington, but Kennewick and the Tri-Cities could not be more different than that. “It doesn’t rain as much as people think there, there’s a lot of farming land and it’s actually really beautiful. Looks almost like Arizona,” he said. “It’s the desert in the middle of the state. People think evergreen trees and rain (when they think of Washington), and we get droughts.”

Favorite after-game treat as a kid: O’Malley clearly has a sweet tooth, as made evident in his answer to this question and the next. “Probably Mountains Dews and Skittles,” he said.

Favorite meal made by his mom: “It’s a dessert – it’s fruit pizza,” O’Malley said. OK, so what is a fruit pizza? “It’s like a cookie dough, the size of a pizza, and cream cheese, fruit and then Jello, and you don’t cook Jello all the way so it’s syrupy, and you drizzle it all over the top and let it cool off. It’s amazing.”

Favorite cartoon as a kid: Ren & Stimpy.

Favorite vacation spot: The local boy kept it in the northwest, picking camping spot Wallowa Lake, Oregon.

What he would do if he wasn’t a baseball player: O’Malley appears to also have a flair for an adrenaline rush. “I always wanted to be like a hunting guide or a fishing guide,” he said. “Or maybe on the SWAT team. That sounds interesting.”

What football team he roots for: This will come as no surprise considering his local ties. “Big Seahawks fan. I watch them every Sunday and I’ve been watching them since I was little.”
