Ex-Mariners OF Taylor Trammell leaves Astros game after crashing into fence

The Houston Astros' Taylor Trammell, a former Seattle Mariners outfielder, left Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers on a cart after crashing into the center field fence.

DETROIT (AP) — Houston Astros outfielder Taylor Trammell was being evaluated for a concussion after being carted off during Wednesday’s loss to the Detroit Tigers following a crash into the center field fence in the first inning.

The Tigers led 4-0 with no one out when Dillon Dingler hit a line drive to deep center. The ball deflected off the glove of Trammell, who played for the AL West rival Seattle Mariners from 2021-23, just before he hit the fence. Dingler ended up with an RBI triple, giving Detroit a five-run lead.

Trammell was examined by the Houston training staff and started to walk off the field before going to a knee. A cart was brought out and he was taken into the tunnel behind right field.

Astros manager Joe Espada said after the 7-2 loss that Trammell was being evaluated for a concussion as well as dealing with stiffness in his neck and back. He was scheduled to travel to Baltimore with the team on Wednesday night.

It was the second time Trammell had needed assistance from trainers in 15 hours. In the ninth inning of Houston’s 1-0 loss on Tuesday night, he landed on his back after catching a foul flyball and had to be checked out before staying in the game.

The Astros went into Wednesday’s game with a 69-57 record, which is 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mariners (68-59) for the AL West lead. Houston had lost three in a row and four of its last five games entering the day, while the Mariners had lost four straight and six of their last seven on the heels of an eight-game win streak.
