Canzone comes up clutch as Mariners walk off White Sox

A new hero stepped up for the Seattle Mariners to make sure they swept the lowly Chicago White Sox.

With two runners on and one out in the bottom of the 11th inning Thursday, right fielder Dominic Canzone provided the walk-off hit, grounding a single through the infield into right field.

Third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who was the automatic runner on second base to begin the inning, chugged his way home and just got his hand on the plate while sliding ahead of the throw to give Seattle a 4-3 victory.

The Mariners improved to 63-53 with the win, which was their fourth straight. They’ve also won six of seven games on their current 10-game homestand.

The walk-off single provides an opportunity to spotlight the contributions of Canzone, which have gone under the radar while the Mariners have had other offensive standouts and newsworthy happenings to focus on lately.

Called up from Triple-A Tacoma on June 9, Canzone now has a .287 average, .344 on-base percentage and .480 slugging percentage in 49 games this season for a strong .824 OPS. He also has seven home runs, eight doubles and 17 RBIs.

Canzone’s walk-off single Thursday notably came against left-handed Chicago reliever Brandon Eisert. Canzone, who hits from the left side, has hung in there against southpaws this year, hitting .258 with a .343 on-base.

The Mariners will continue play Friday at 6:40 p.m. when they open a three-game set at T-Mobile Park against the Tampa Bay Rays. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin with Wyman and Bob live from the ballpark at 2, and the pregame show will follow at 5:30.
