New documentary chronicles Griffey’s work as a photographer

Ken Griffey Jr. is best known for his iconic swing that produced 630 home runs over a legendary 22-year Hall of Fame career.

But these days, the former Seattle Mariners superstar is honing a different craft.

An upcoming documentary, titled “Photographer No. 24,” will chronicle Griffey’s experience shooting the 2025 Masters as a credentialed photographer for Getty Images. Griffey made headlines last spring for some of the photos he took while shooting the famed tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.

The documentary premiers next Sunday, April 5, at 10 a.m. on NBC and Peacock. It comes out the week of the 2026 Masters, which is April 9-12.

“I get some doors opened because of who I am, but I take what I do very seriously,” Griffey said in a recent trailer for the documentary.

Griffey, who spent 13 seasons with the Mariners from 1989-99 and 2009-10, has photographed a number of other sporting events in addition to the Masters – including NFL, MLB and MLS games. Earlier this month, he was shooting the World Baseball Classic for Getty.

Griffey isn’t the only former Mariners star who has taken up photography. Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson, who studied photojournalism at USC, is now a professional photographer whose work has been featured in publications such as Rolling Stone.
