Brendan Donovan returns to Mariners from 10-day injured list

The Seattle Mariners have their key offseason addition back, as All-Star third baseman Brendan Donovan has been activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday’s series opener against the White Sox in Chicago.

To make room for Donovan’s return, the Mariners optioned catcher Jhonny Pereda to Triple-A Tacoma from the 26-man active roster.

The optioning of Pereda is a good sign for another All-Star on the Mariners roster. Cal Raleigh missed three games over the past week and has not played catcher since May 1 with a side issue, which required the M’s to carry Pereda as a third catcher while Raleigh was either unavailable or limited to designated hitter duties.

Donovan has been out of action for Seattle since April 18 with a left groin muscle strain. He underwent sports hernia surgery last fall.

When the 29-year-old Donovan has been healthy, he’s been one of the Mariners’ best hitters this season. In 18 games, he’s hitting .304 with a .437 on-base percentage, .518 slugging percentage, .954 OPS, three home rurs, three doubles and nine walks to 12 strikeouts.

Donovan, a former National League Gold Glove winner as a utility man, has been the Mariners’ primary third baseman in 2026, and typically hits in the leadoff spot against right-handed starting pitchers.

Donovan had a one-game rehab stint with the Double-A Arkansas Travelers this week, going 1 for 3 with a double, and RBI and two walks. He was scheduled for a second rehab game with Arkansas on Wednesday, but the contest was rained out.

The 30-year-old Pereda went 2 for 5 with a run scored in two games while up with the Mariners. He previously played in the big leagues with the Marlins, Athletics and Twins.

The M’s begin a seven-game road trip at 4:40 p.m. against Chicago on Friday, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports beginning at 3:30 with the pregame show.
