SEATTLE MARINERS

20 wins in 20 days: M’s, Hawks have Seattle sports in rarefied air

Sep 26, 2025, 1:43 PM

The past few weeks have been an all-timer for Seattle sports fans.

It all begins with the red-hot Seattle Mariners, who have won 17 of their past 18 games en route to their first American League West title since 2001.

Are the Mariners about to be ‘America’s team’ in the playoffs?

The Mariners pulled off a landmark sweep of their most bitter rival last weekend, taking all three games from the Astros in Houston to grab a stranglehold of the division race. The M’s then returned home to an electric T-Mobile Park, where they clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday night and then locked up the AL West crown on Wednesday night in front of their fans.

Along the way, Cal Raleigh continued his march through the record books. On the same night the Mariners secured their first division title in 24 years, the All-Star catcher blasted two more home runs on Wednesday to become just the seventh player in MLB history to reach 60 homers in a season.

And while the Mariners have been busy gearing up for a potential deep run in October, the Seattle Seahawks have gotten off to a 3-1 start. After a season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks bounced back with victories over the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals – the latter of which came on a game-winning field as time expired on Thursday night.

As it turns out, this multi-team stretch of winning is rare not just for Seattle, but for any major sports city.

The Mariners and Seahawks are a combined 20-2 over the past 20 days. According to OptaSTATS, it’s the first time ever that an MLB team and an NFL team from the same metro area have combined to win 20-plus games in 20 days, with each team contributing multiple victories over that span.

The best part? There’s still plenty more for Seattle sports fans to look forward to in the coming days and weeks.

The Mariners have already clinched a top-two seed in the AL playoffs, which gives them a bye into the AL Division Series. With one of the deepest and most complete rosters in baseball, the M’s are a serious threat to reach their first-ever World Series.

Raleigh, meanwhile, still has three more regular-season games to match or surpass Aaron Judge’s AL record of 62 home runs.

The Seahawks should be favored in two of their next three matchups.

And don’t forget about the UW Huskies, who are 3-0 heading into Saturday afternoon’s showdown at Husky Stadium against top-ranked and defending national champion Ohio State.

After all the heartbreak and disappointment Seattle sports fans have endured over the years, perhaps now they’re finally getting the payoff.

Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
