Clayton: Why Seahawks, Jamal Adams are in for an interesting next week

It’s pretty clear the Seahawks and safety Jamal Adams are not close to a contract extension, but the next week should be interesting.

Adams’ friend and former teammate Marcus Maye, a safety for the Jets, is on a franchise tag and has until next Thursday to agree on a long-term deal with New York. New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Williams is in the same situation. Franchise tags for safeties this year are worth $10.612 million.

Neither safety will come close to what Adams could get, but it will be interesting to see if either one or both can come up with a good number. The Denver Broncos franchised Justin Simmons twice, and he ended up signing a four-year extension to become the NFL’s highest-paid safety at $15.25 million a year.

Currently there are seven franchise players heading to the tag deadline. Deadlines get deals done, but sometimes the numbers don’t work out and the player has to stay on a one-year contract.

An Adams’ deal should come in at around $16 million a year, but if he wants to get to the $17-18 million range because of his record sack numbers, that would be a problem for the Seahawks. Adams, who is set to make $9.8 million on his fifth-year option this season, cost the Seahawks two first-round picks and more, and they need to get something done. Adams will be one of the biggest stories in training camp.
