It’s getting pretty thin for the Huskies at some key spots as the injury bug continues taking its toll. And UW Insider Ryan Divish tells Brock and Salk there are far more questions than answers about what’s really going on down on Montlake.
Divish tells Brock and Salk coach Steve Sarkisian won’t say how receiver James Johnson suffered a dislocated wrist, and Johnson isn’t talking. But it came as quite a surprise to the veteran Husky watcher, considering Johnson showed no sign of injury after Wednesday’s practice.
“I talked to him for 10 minutes after practice,” Divish says. “I would think I would notice if he had a dislocated wrist if I was talking to him and I would think a dislocated wrist would be slightly painful.”
The injury came on the same day coach Steve Sarkisian kicked two other players off the team for “violating team rules.”
Divish says there’s plenty of speculation as to what might have happened but says we’ll likely never get the true story, at least officially.
“You have two guys that show up hurt pretty badly on Thursday and two guys dismissed from the team, I mean you can add it up a little bit.”
The losses spell trouble for an already injury-depleted Husky team.
With the UW preparing for its season opener September 1st against San Diego State, Divish says quarterback Keith Price is the only dependable part of the Huskies offense.
“But have to wonder is he going to stay upright because you have questions at the offensive line, does he have weapons because you don’t have Chris Polk anymore, and you only have a banged up receiving crew?” Divish wonders.
Divish says there are plenty of questions for the defense as well, with sophomore linebacker Jamaal Kearse the latest to go down after suffering a stress fracture in his tibia.
“You’re running out there with your second and third team safeties, you’re running out linebackers that were safeties last Friday. We have not seen the best 11 guys that they can put out since probably the first or second practice,” Divish says.
That’s severely hampering new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and his ability to overhaul the Huskies much maligned defensive unit.
“You know you have a set number of guys and you kind of scheme and plan for what their talent level is and what their skill set is and all of a sudden they’re all standing on the sidelines with injuries. That limits you.”
Divish says he stands by his earlier projections the Huskies could win six or seven games, as long as QB Price stays healthy.
“If Keith Price gets hurt were to somehow get hurt or somehow miss a start they’re not winning that game especially if it’s a conference game because the Pac-12 North is a lot better and their schedule isn’t that easy. There’s no free rides on their schedule other than Portland State.”
