Kevin Calabro, voice of the Sonics, takes Blazers announcing gig

Kevin Calabro, the memorable voice of the Seattle Supersonics and a former 710 ESPN Seattle host, is returning to full-time NBA announcing.

Calabro is the Portland Trail Blazers new television play-by-play man, the team announced Friday. The Blazers are owned by Seattle native Paul Allen, who also owns the Seahawks.

“I’m excited to join a great organization like the Trail Blazers that’s committed to excellence; is led by a devoted owner in Paul Allen; and is supported by the most passionate fans anywhere in the country,” said Calabro in a statement. “With two young stars in Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, a great group of teammates and a terrific coach like Terry Stotts, the Trail Blazers have an incredibly bright future. I consider it a privilege to live and work in the Pacific Northwest, and look forward to becoming part of this franchise and the greater Portland community.”

Though Calabro hasn’t been a full-time team announcer since the Sonics left Seattle in 2008, he has kept up a busy broadcast schedule. He currently announces NBA games for ESPN Radio, Turner Broadcasting and NBA TV, college basketball games for the Pac-12 Network, and is part of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament team for Westwood One Radio.

He hosted The Kevin Calabro Show on 710 ESPN Seattle from the station’s inception in 2009 until 2012, and has remained a regular guest on 710 ESPN Seattle programming.
