Seahawks’ Michael Bennett putting sack dance on hold again
Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett wore a sweatshirt Wednesday depicting his sack dance from two weeks ago that drew a fine from the NFL. He said he's done with that celebration for the time being.
RENTON – The NFL fined Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett more than $12,000 last week for what it deemed to be an inappropriate display in Seattle’s win over the Rams. Bennett began to celebrate a fourth-quarter sack like he usually does, putting his hands behind his head and moving around his hips in a tribute to 80s pro wrestler Ravishing Rick Rude. Only this time it was more of a thrusting action than the typical swivel. Officials flagged Bennett on the third pump, just like in the “Key and Peele” skit.
That moment is depicted in the sweatshirt Bennett wore Wednesday. It had an image of his sack dance over the words “TWO PUMPS ONLY” written in block lettering.
But there will be no pumps for the time being. Bennett said he’s shelving his sack dance, something he also did last season and is doing again at the behest of his wife. He said last week that he isn’t clear on the league’s rules with regards to how he can and cannot celebrate a sack. He still isn’t.
“I don’t have any clarity,” Bennett said. “I just know that they take a lot of money from me so my wife told me to stop dancing. I’m done with that for a little bit.”
Bennett didn’t do the dance after splitting a sack with Jarran Reed last week against Arizona.
Any plans on a new celebration?
“I don’t know what I’m going to do yet,” he said. “It has to be spontaneous.”
The sweatshirts, by the way, are available for purchase at BlackSanta72.com (where else?). The cost: $55 for a crewneck or a hoodie.
“Doing good online right now,” he said.
