Pete Carroll says Bradley Sowell feels remarkably well, mum on Seahawks’ LT plan

RENTON – Seahawks left tackle Bradley Sowell may be back soon than it initially appeared. Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Sowell would be out for a few weeks after spraining his MCL Sunday night. Asked on Wednesday for an updated timetable, Carroll said Sowell is feeling remarkably – and almost unbelievably – well.

“Sowell looks like he’s not hurt,” Carroll said, sounding almost incredulous. “I don’t what to tell you. I don’t know how this happened. He’s in his stance, out of his stance. We’re going to see what happens another day from now, but he looks great. Whatever recovery he’s making, he’s 1,000 miles ahead of what schedule it could have been.

“I don’t know what that means when he starts to take a workload, but he’s barking at us right now; he thinks he can play. I don’t know how he’s able to do that. Something’s in the water. I don’t know. We’ll see.”

It looked bad when Sowell went down in the fourth quarter Sunday night. He had to be helped to the sideline then left the field on a cart, covering his head with a towel. And while the initial timetable from Carroll was that he’d be out a few weeks, he didn’t rule out the possibility of Sowell playing Sunday, though he said it’s not likely.

“You would never think so,” Carroll said. “He shouldn’t be able to, but he’s trying to talk us into it today. That’s all I can tell you. I can’t imagine that’s going to happen, but we’ll see.”

Carroll wouldn’t reveal what the Seahawks will do at left tackle while he’s out, though undrafted rookie George Fant was again the first name he mentioned. Fant replaced Sowell Sunday night, playing 24 snaps. Carroll also mentioned rookie third-round pick Rees Odhiambo and veteran J’Marcus Webb as options. Odhiambo played left tackle at Boise State while Webb has experience at both tackle spots.

“Same plan that we had when you asked me on Monday: wait and see,” Carroll said with a chuckle. “You’ll find out. George is ready to play, and Rees is ready to play and we can use J’Marcus, too.”

Carroll said he’s unsure about strong safety Kam Chancellor returning this week after missing the last two games with a groin injury.

“I hope so. We were optimistic,” Carroll said. “He has to make it through the week. We’ll see. We’ll see. We don’t know yet. Hoping.”

Carroll was similarly noncommittal regarding linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, who didn’t play Sunday night because of a sprained ankle. Carroll said he’ll run on Thursday.
