Groz: Seahawks need to address 1 position in particular in the draft

Mar 2, 2020, 11:24 AM

The Seahawks currently have six selections to their name in the 2020 NFL Draft, which is less than two months away. What positions should they be targeting in the draft?

Moore: 5 Seahawks veterans who could be cut before the 2020 season

The big conversation about the Seahawks this offseason has been regarding the pass rush, especially with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and defensive tackle Jarran Reed set to hit free agency. But there’s another position on the other side of the ball that 710 ESPN Seattle’s Dave “The Groz” Grosby says may be even more important to address.

That would be running back, a position that was decimated by injury last in the 2019 season.

Rashaad Penny suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 13, just as he was enjoying the closest thing to sustained success he had seen in his two years as a pro, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said last week that Penny may have to start training camp on the PUP list. A few weeks after Penny’s injury, even more disaster struck for Seattle as lead back Chris Carson (hip) and backup C.J. Prosise (arm) both went down to their own season-ending injuries. As a result, the Seahawks were left with just rookie Travis Homer in their backfield, and they signed Marshawn Lynch out of retirement to complement him for the final week of the regular season and the playoffs.

As Groz points out in his latest Just A Minute video, the Seahawks rely heavily on their run game and can’t afford to go through into another season with any kind of risk of ending up in the same situation. That’s why he hopes Seattle uses the draft to provide help at the position.
