Seahawks TE Will Dissly may have shorter recovery following ‘minimally invasive’ Achilles surgery

Seahawks tight end Will Dissly suffered a second straight season-ending leg injury in Seattle’s Week 6 win over the Cleveland Browns, rupturing his left Achilles in the second quarter. Just like he was able to return in time for 2019 training camp from a torn right patellar tendon, however, he could follow a similar timeline ahead of the 2020 season.

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said Friday on KIRO Radio 97.3 FM’s The Pete Carroll Show that Dissly’s recovery time is expected to be sped up due to the success of the surgery he underwent Thursday to repair his Achilles.

“As a matter of fact, his surgery on Thursday was really successful,” Carroll said. “He had a minimally invasive procedure that worked about perfectly and he’ll come back a good couple months before he would have got back otherwise.”

According to Healio.com, most NFL players return from Achilles ruptures in an average of 339.8 days after surgery. With the estimation of Dissly returning two months ahead of that, he could be back in nine months, which would fall near the start of 2020 training camp.

Dissly, a former UW Huskies tight end, was enjoying a breakout sophomore season for the Seahawks. He had 23 receptions for 262 yards and four touchdowns this year, and before his injury he ranked first among NFL tight ends in touchdown receptions, sixth in receiving yards and was tied for seventh in receptions.

“Breaks everybody’s heart because he’s a good kid,” Carroll said of Dissly’s injury.

Carroll added that Dissly was infectiously positive in the locker room after suffering his injury about his upcoming recovery.

“His attitude in the locker room after the game… he can hardly get around and he’s telling me how quick he’s gonna get back and how he knows how to go through this and he’s been there before – you know, he’s pumping me up,” Carroll said. “I’m in there trying to (give him) all the sympathy and feelings and compassion and all that, and I’m getting fired up for him because he’s turned it around already. That’s why a guy like that is so special and so unique. He’s got unbelievable makeup.”
