The Mariners have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Matt Wisler from the San Diego Padres for cash.

Jon Morosi explains why Mariners could make playoffs in 2021

Wisler, 26, was designated for assignment by San Diego on June 29. In 2019 with the Padres, he had a 5.28 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 34 strikeouts and 10 walks in 29 innings pitched over 21 appearances. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Wisler worked multiple innings in nine of those appearances.

The Mariners become Wisler’s fourth MLB team.

A 2011 seventh-round draft pick by San Diego, he was traded to Atlanta in 2015 as part of the deal that brought Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr. to the Padres. He appeared in 74 games for the Braves from 2015-18, including 49 starts, then was shipped to Cincinnati just prior to the 2018 MLB trade deadline in a deal that sent Adam Duvall to Atlanta.

Wisler had a strong run with the Reds, maintaining a 2.03 ERA and 0.98 WHIP over 11 appearances in the second half of the 2018 season.

The Reds traded Wisler back to San Diego on April 1.

Wisler has a base salary of $570,000 this year and has four years of arbitration remaining on his contract.

With the additional of Wisler, the Mariners’ 40-man roster is full.
