Seahawks once broke much less desirable record after a 21-0 start

Nov 4, 2013, 1:40 PM | Updated: 1:40 pm

While some are not exactly smiling at the record the Seahawks broke over the weekend, making the biggest comeback in franchise history after being down 21-0 to the 0-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, history reminds us it could’ve been worse, a lot worse.

On this day in 1979, the Seahawks were facing the same 21-0 deficit to start their Nov. 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams at the Kingdome. But in the 1979 game, the Seahawks’ record-breaking turn would recognize them not for a comeback, but for the worst offensive performance in NFL history.

According to ProFootballReference.com, the total yards gained by the Seahawks in the Nov. 4, 1979 game against the Rams was minus-7. Yes, that is negative 7.

In that game, the Seahawks only recorded one first down, with quarterback Jim Zorn getting sacked six times for a loss of 55 yards.

The 1979 game ended with a final score of 24-0, with the Seahawks never making it past their own 42-yard line, according to the Historylink.org entry on the game.

While the Seahawks’ opponent in both the 1979 game and the Nov. 3, 2013 game ended with a final score of 24, the 2013 Seahawks were able to score 27 points for their record-breaking 27-24 comeback victory on Sunday.

That’s a much better outcome.
