The Mariners have started building back up their bullpen, signing left-handed reliever Zac Rosscup on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Rosscup has appeared in 88 MLB games since 2014, mostly with the Cubs but also with the Rockies and Dodgers, though he missed the entire 2017 season with a shoulder injury.

The highlight of Rosscup’s major league career to date is an immaculate inning – retiring the side on nine pitches, all strikes – against the Mariners in Seattle on Aug. 19 to close out a 12-1 Dodgers win.

Rosscup has been limited by injuries in the majors, but he has strong stuff, registering 87 strikeouts over 65 2/3 innings over four seasons. He had a 4.76 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 11 appearances (11 1/3 innings) with Los Angeles in 2018.

“When healthy, Zac has swing-and-miss stuff, which has translated at all levels,” Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a press release. “We look forward to seeing what he can do with good health and real opportunity.”

Rosscup is a Pacific Northwest native, having been born in Clackamas, Ore., going to high school in Forest Grove (about 45 minutes outside of Portland), and playing college ball at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. He was a 28th-round selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2009 MLB Draft.
