The Seahawks kick off their preseason at home Thursday night against the Indianapolis Colts. Seattle’s general manager John Schneider joined play-by-play announcer Steve Raible for a pregame interview on 710 ESPN Seattle ahead of the action. Schneider offered a quick injury update concerning running back C.J. Prosise, and told Raible what he’ll be watching for from this Seahawks’ squad.

Rost: 3 players to watch in Seahawks’ preseason opener vs Colts

On the team’s new emphasis on the run game

“It’s always been an emphasis, just depending on the personnel… guys like Marshawn Lynch… they don’t come around very often. Right now throughout camp our running back group has been really impressive, really competitive. Unfortunately, C.J. (Prosise) was having a great camp and he’s not going to play tonight…has a little hip injury he’s working through. J.D. McKissic’s done a great job too, Mike Davis finished the season for us in a very strong manner last year. There’s always been an emphasis on (the run). (We also have new offensive line coach) Mike Solari coming in, really focusing more on inside zone and keeping it tight. So we’re just going to look a little bit different in that regard as well.”

What kind of training camp has it been?

“Just hotly competitive. The guys are working their tails off and there’s a lot of open competition at a number of positions and we have a lot of work to do here in the preseason to figure out how this thing’s going to come together. But it’s been great with the two new coordinators… it’s been very exciting. Change happens in this league and it’s good and so far it is here. The practices have been real crisp… we’re excited to see all these guys get their opportunity to get out and finally play under the lights.”

Did you seek out young and hungry players?

“I think some of the biggest mistakes we’ve made on the personnel side are guys that aren’t hungry or lack that edge, the confidence to compete with in the past with the Kam Chancellors and Richard Shermans of this world. And so we really focused on getting back to identifying those types of guys that have that confidence level to take that step forward on their own.”

On the leadership from LT Duane Brown

“It was a big deal for us to get Duane into the building and finally get him extended and have him here and have a true left tackle in place. George (Fant) was doing a great job last year before he had the unfortunate knee injury. But (Brown) has done a great job coming in here really as a leader, and that’s hard when you come in from another team. And he’s just done a fantastic job along with (center Justin) Britt of kind of leading this group here.”

No. 1 thing you want to see Thursday?

“I don’t want to see lack of discipline; I don’t want to see false starts. You’re going to see some sloppiness because it’s a preseason game. But I think really the focus on just being clean and crisp… and then obviously we’re going to get some more guys back healthy next week, but keeping healthy and making sure we get through the game and then seeing some of these young guys, the swagger that they’ve been practicing with, to see that carry over onto the field here tonight.”
