Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto hoped utility player Mike Freeman would clear waivers after he was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for new pitcher Chase De Jong on Wednesday. Dipoto got his wish.

Freeman cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. He will return to the Mariners’ spring training camp as a non-roster invitee after having to be absent since Wednesday.

“We do hope that Mike clears waivers and stays in our camp,” Dipoto said of Freeman on the Cactus League Report on Wednesday. “Mike does things right, he’s always in the right place, and as you saw last year in September, Mike Freeman helps you win games in the big leagues.”

The 29-year-old Freeman hit 5 for 13 (.385) in 13 games over three stints with the Mariners late last season after coming to the team from the Arizona Diamondbacks on a waiver claim. Entering Saturday, he is 2 for 8 (.250) with a double and two RBIs in Cactus League play.

Freeman appeared in games at second base and shortstop for Seattle in 2016, and played in the corner outfield spots for Arizona.
