In their second move of the day, the Mariners traded catcher Jason Goldstein to the Oakland Athletics for left-handed pitcher Dillon Overton on Thursday afternoon.

The Mariners designated catcher Jesus Sucre for assignment to make room for Overton on the 40-man roster.

Overton, 25, went went 1-3 with an 11.47 ERA, 17 strikeouts and seven walks in seven games (five starts) last year for the A’s, his first season in the majors. At Triple-A Nashville, he went 13-5 with a 3.29 ERA, 105 strikeouts and 31 walks in 21 games, including 20 starts. He adds to Seattle’s depth behind their five-man starting rotation, which appears set in stone heading into spring training with Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, James Paxton, Drew Smyly and Yovani Gallardo.

“Dillon has been successful at every level of the minor leagues,” Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a press release. “He is a young, controllable pitcher with Major League upside who adds to our depth.”

Goldstein, 22, was a ninth-round selection by Seattle in last year’s MLB Draft. He split time with the Arizona League Mariners and Short-A Everett Aquasox.

Sucre, 29, hit .480 in nine games last season with Seattle.

The Mariners’ previous move Thursday was to claim catcher Tuffy Gosewich from Atlanta.
