Not long after Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto stepped off the stage at the team’s annual pre-spring training luncheon Thursday, he made another move.
Dipoto claimed catcher Tuffy Gosewich off waivers from Atlanta and designated right-handed pitcher Jonathan Aro for assignment to make room for him on the 40-man roster.

Gosewich, 33, appeared in 33 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016. He hit .156 (15 for 90) with three home runs and seven RBIs. He spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Reno, hitting .342 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs, and was named a Pacific Coast League All-Star.
He made his MLB debut in 2013, and appeared in games in each of the past four years with Arizona. He was claimed off waivers by Atlanta on Nov. 18.
Aro, 26, came to the Mariners last year as part of the trade that brought Wade Miley to Seattle from Boston prior to last season. He appeared in just one game for the M’s in 2016, allowing a hit, a walk and no runs in 2/3 innings. He went 3-2 with a save, 25 strikeouts and 2.48 ERA in 24 games (36 1/3 innings) for Triple-A Tacoma.
