Seattle Mariners third baseman Brendan Donovan is still dealing with some symptoms following a concussion as he tries to return to the field with less than three weeks left in the regular season, he told MLB.com in an article published Monday.

Donovan has been out of action since being hit in the head during batting practice on Aug. 22. He confirmed to MLB.com that he was not wearing a helmet when he was injured.

Dizziness and nausea have been ongoing issues for Donovan when he has worked out on the field since the injury.

“I get on the field, and I feel like I’m going to throw up,” Donovan said Sunday to MLB.com. “And then I take ground balls, and I have to take every other one because I’m going to throw up. So that’s kind of been the process to this point.”

Donovan provided insight on his status in MLB’s concussion protocol.

“With the concussion protocol, everything is a progression,” Donovan said. “So it’s like, if you can’t get over these hurdles, you can’t progress. And we’re kind of just stuck on these hurdles and keep having these symptoms. So that’s why it’s taken two weeks so far.”

Donovan has played only 39 games this season – his first since being traded to Seattle from the St. Louis Cardinals – mainly due to two injured list stints for a groin injury, which was related to offseason sports hernia surgery. He maintains that he is hoping to make a return before season’s end.

“With brain injuries – yes, I want to play, but I also want to be able to like hang out with my kids and talk to my kids and things like that,” Donovan said. “So that’s always in the back of my mind, too. But it’s just like, I still want to play. I’ve been very vocal about that, and I’ve kind of had that taken away from me multiple times this year.”
