Details on Derick Hall deal and Seahawks’ current salary cap space

The Seattle Seahawks secured another foundational piece to a long-term deal last week, signing edge rusher Derick Hall to a three-year, $42 million extension that keeps him under contract through 2029.

With details of Hall’s contract now available on Over The Cap and Spotrac, here’s a closer look the contract, the year-by-year salary cap hits and how it impacts Seattle’s cap space.

The basics

Hall, a 2023 second-round draft pick, had one year left on his four-year, $9.12 million rookie deal. According to Spotrac, the remainder of his rookie deal is folded into his extension, creating what is essentially now a four-year, $44 million deal.

Hall’s extension includes $21 million of guaranteed money, as initially reported last week.

Year-by-year salary cap hits

Here’s a look at the year-by-year salary cap hits for the Seahawks, according to Over The Cap.

Keep in mind, the salary cap is projected to continue increasing each year. That’s why teams often backload their cap hits. Also, there are mechanisms for teams to push cap hits into the future, which the Seahawks could do if they end up signing Hall to another extension down the road.

• 2026 – $6.2 million
• 2027 – $7.5 million
• 2028 – $13.75 million
• 2029 – $17.25 million

Seattle Seahawks salary cap space

After Hall’s deal, the Seahawks have the 12th-most salary cap space in the NFL at $25.5 million, according to Over The Cap.

Some of that cap space could go toward a top-of-the-market extension for three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who is now eligible for a new deal as he heads into his fourth season.

Also, Seahawks general manager John Schneider has said he likes to keep cap space available during the season for trades and other potential moves. Seattle has made a big trade deadline acquisition each of the past three years, adding Leonard Williams in 2023, Ernest Jones IV in 2024 and Rashid Shaheed in 2025.

And looking ahead, quarterback Sam Darnold could be ticketed for a massive extension next offseason. Defensive tackle Byron Murphy II and tight end AJ Barner also could be in line for big extensions next year, with Jones and safety Julian Love looming as potential candidates too.
