With Bryce Miller slated to return from the injured list and make his season debut on Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners are going with a six-man rotation this week.
Opening day starter Logan Gilbert began the turn through the six-man rotation with a brilliant performance on Sunday, tossing six scoreless innings of one-hit ball in Seattle’s 2-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
Here’s how the rest of the Mariners’ rotation lines up for this week’s four-game series at the Houston Astros and Friday’s series opener at home against the San Diego Padres:
• Monday – George Kirby (2.94 ERA) vs. Astros
• Tuesday – Bryan Woo (4.02 ERA) vs. Astros
• Wednesday – Bryce Miller vs. Astros
• Thursday – Luis Castillo (6.57 ERA) vs. Astros
• Friday – Emerson Hancock (3.21 ERA) vs. Padres
Miller essentially slots into Hancock’s spot in the rotation this week, which pushes Hancock back and gives him an extra two days of rest before he starts Friday night against the Padres.
As Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reported on Saturday, there’s a good chance Seattle could only go with a six-man rotation for this week. The Mariners will reevaluate their options after that, with one possibility being using Miller and Castillo in a piggyback role where one starts the game and the other follows with a long relief outing.
First pitch for the Mariners’ series opener in Houston on Monday night is at 5:10 p.m. Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports begins with the pregame show at 4 p.m.
