The Seattle Mariners placed outfielder Victor Robles on the 10-day injured list with a right pec strain and transferred relief pitcher Carlos Vargas from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL on Wednesday morning.
In a corresponding move, the Mariners selected 33-year-old first baseman/outfielder Connor Joe from Triple-A Tacoma. Joe is batting eighth and starting at first base for Wednesday’s series finale against the Texas Rangers, which gives regular first baseman Josh Naylor an off day.
According to The Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish, Robles got hurt during pregame work on Tuesday while throwing from the outfield to the infield. Robles is batting 3 for 13 with a double and a stolen base in five games this season. He spent most of last year on the IL after suffering a dislocation and fracture in his shoulder while making a leaping catch into the right-field netting in San Francisco.
The Mariners initially placed Vargas on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain on March 27. The 26-year-old right-hander was one of Seattle’s most-used relievers last season, posting a 3.97 ERA with 54 strikeouts and 23 walks in 77 innings.
Joe signed a minor league contract with the Mariners in February. The six-year MLB veteran had a strong spring, batting .362 with one home run, one triple and six doubles in 47 Cactus League at-bats. He opened the season at Triple-A Tacoma, hitting .235 with one homer and four doubles in nine games with the Rainiers.
