UW women’s basketball moves up in latest AP Top 25 poll

The UW Huskies remained unbeaten with a pair of home wins last week and moved up one spot in the latest women’s basketball Top 25 poll from The Associated Press as a result.

The 7-0 Huskies climbed to No. 21 in the rankings released on Monday. UW, which cracked the top 25 for the first time in two years earlier this season, has now been ranked for four straight weeks.

UW beat Southern University 66-40 and UC San Diego 67-50 last week.

The Huskies’ week carried more good news than just a pair of victories. Senior guard Elle Ladine, a second-team All-Big Ten selection who led the team with 17.0 points per game last season, returned to action. After missing UW’s first six games, Ladine had nine points and three rebounds in 14 minutes during Friday’s win over UC San Diego.

The Huskies also saw five-star freshman forward Brynn McGaughy continue to make an impact. McGaughy had 14 points against Southern, and 10 points and eight rebounds against UC San Diego. After being held scoreless against Fresno St. on Nov. 14, she’s averaging 14.7 points over the past three games.

UW hosts San Jose State on Monday night before starting conference play with a road matchup against 16th-ranked USC on Sunday.

UConn remained as the No. 1 team in Monday’s rankings. Texas moved up two spots to No. 2 while South Carolina and UCLA each moved down one spot to third and fourth, respectfully. LSU rounded out the top five.
