Bump: Seahawks rookie primed for big second half

The offense has been a major factor of the Seattle Seahawks’ success through the first seven weeks of the season.
Seattle ranks fifth in the NFL in scoring (27.6 points per game) and 10th in total offense (350.6 yards per game).
The passing game has been at the forefront of it with quarterback Sam Darnold helping the group rank seventh in passing yards (244.4 yards per game) and first in yards per pass attempt (9.0).
Stacy Rost: Could Seattle Seahawks fix run game at trade deadline?
Darnold’s connection with wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been the driving for of Seattle’s passing game. The third-year wide receiver’s 819 receiving yards lead the NFL by a whopping 190 yards over the No. 2 receiver.
The Seahawks hope to keep their passing game rolling after their bye week, and they could have another player ready to make more of an impact in it.
During his Four Down Territory segment on Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy on Thursday, Seahawks radio network analyst and former NFL wideout Michael Bumpus said he thinks another one of the team’s receivers is in line for a bigger second half of the season.
“It’s Tory Horton, and I think a big second half for him would be adding just 300 yards and three more touchdowns to the season,” Bumpus said. “You’re counting on JSN, you’re counting on the run game and a sprinkle of the tight ends and Cooper Kupp in there.
“You’re not really counting on Tory Horton to contribute massively to these wins. I think he gets one more return for a touchdown, I think he has that in him, and I also think that he scores two or three more touchdowns (on offense).”
Horton, a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, has been quiet of late after making an early impact. The Colorado State product had a touchdown catch in Weeks 2, 3 and 5, and he also had a punt return TD in Week 3.

In total, Horton has nine catches for 113 yards and three TDs, which all came in the four-game span of Weeks 2-5. He leads the league with 238 punt return yards, which includes the longest return in the NFL this season on his 95-yard TD against the New Orleans Saints.
The rookie has gone without a reception on just four total targets over the past two games, but he’s remained in the general range of playing 40-50% of the team’s offensive snaps.
As teams continue to key on Smith-Njigba and Seattle’s other offensive weapons, Bumpus believes that will open up more opportunities for Horton.
“I think that for Sam Darnold to stay in the mix for this MVP conversation, he’s got to be efficient, and now you get more guys involved,” Bumpus said. “And the more success you have with JSN and Cooper Kupp and A.J. Barner – hopefully the run gets going – No. 15 (Horton) gets lost in the mix.”
