Mariners to unveil Ichiro statue in 2026

SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners will unveil a statue of Ichiro Suzuki at T-Mobile Park next year to honor the Hall of Famer, chairman John Stanton said during Ichiro’s number retirement ceremony Saturday night.

Ichiro will join Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez and legendary play-by-play voice Dave Niehaus as those who have statues in their honor at the stadium.

The statue is set to feature Ichiro in his iconic batting stance.

“In 2026, we will honor the most prolific hitter our game has ever seen – the man who holds the all-time record for hits in a season, the man who has more global hits than any other player in the history of baseball,” Stanton said. “Next year, to celebrate his transcendent international role in baseball and his leadership of the Seattle Mariners, we will build a statue of Ichiro Suzuki.”

Suzuki became the first Japanese-born player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last month. On Saturday, he became the fourth player to have their number retired by the Mariners, joining Griffey, Martinez and Jackie Robinson.

Ichiro spent 14 of his 19 seasons in MLB with the Mariners. He won American League Rookie of the Year, AL MVP and the batting title with the Mariners during his first MLB season in 2001, helping Seattle tie an MLB record with 116 wins. He was a 10-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner, three-time Silver Slugger winner and two-time batting champion during his career.

Ichiro amassed 3,089 hits, 117 home runs, 780 RBIs, 509 stolen bases and a career .311 batting average during his MLB career. In 2004, he set the league’s single-season hit with 262.

In his 28 seasons between MLB and the Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball League, Ichiro collected 4,367 hits – the most by any pro baseball player.
