Josh Naylor exits Mariners game with shoulder issue

Seattle Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor exited Thursday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox with shoulder soreness, manager Dan Wilson said postgame.

Naylor left the game after showing some discomfort on a trio of swings during a three-pitch at-bat in which he grounded out in to end the bottom of the third. Wilson said the team would further evaluate Naylor, but he wasn’t concerned with any long-term impact and called it a day-to-day situation.

Veteran Donovan Solano came into the game as a defensive replacement for Naylor in the top of the fourth.

Naylor exited a June 23 game with shoulder discomfort while playing for Arizona. He avoided a stint on the injured list but was held out for five of the Diamondbacks’ next seven games. Naylor hasn’t been on the IL since missing about a month late in the 2023 season with a right oblique strain. The 28 year old also missed the final three months of the 2021 campaign and first week of the following season with a fractured and dislocated right ankle suffered on a scary collision in the outfield with a Cleveland teammate.

Naylor was playing his 13th game with the Mariners since coming over in a trade with Arizona on July 24. The left-hand-hitting first baseman is batting .261 with a .798 OPS, three home runs six RBIs and 10 stolen bases with the M’s. He’s hitting .292 with an .807 OPS, 14 home runs, 65 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 106 total games this season.

The Mariners were able to acquire Naylor before this year’s trade deadline in a deal that sent left-hander Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi to the Diamondbacks.
