Report: Mariners promote 2 highly touted prospects to Double-A

The Seattle Mariners have reportedly promoted two of their top prospects – 20-year-old shortstop Colt Emerson and 22-year-old switch-pitching phenom Jurrangelo Cijntje – from High-A Everett to Double-A Arkansas.

Emerson, a 2023 first-round high school draft pick from Ohio, is the Mariners’ top prospect. He’s ranked as Baseball America’s No. 14 overall prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 15 overall prospect, due in large part to his polished left-handed swing and advanced plate discipline.

Emerson slashed .281/.388/.453 with 11 home runs, five triples and 16 doubles in 90 games with Everett this season. He posted an .841 OPS, along with a 13.1% walk rate and 16.5% strikeout rate.

Emerson has been red-hot since early June, batting .338 with seven homers, two triples, 12 doubles and a 1.040 OPS over his past 40 games.

Cijntje, a 2024 first-round pick out of Mississippi State, is a baseball unicorn who pitches both right-handed and left-handed. The Curacao native is ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 70 overall prospect and Baseball America’s No. 90 overall prospect.

Cijntje posted a 4.58 ERA in 74 2/3 innings with High-A Everett this season, while totaling 83 strikeouts and 35 walks. However, his overall stat line is deceptive. He currently has more velocity and better stuff as a right-hander, which has produced some dramatic splits.

As a right-handed pitcher, Cijntje has faced 264 batters and limited them to a .190 batting average, while totaling 76 strikeouts and 19 walks. As a southpaw, he’s faced 50 batters and logged a .290 opponents’ batting average with seven strikeouts and 16 walks.
