The Sounders announced on Friday that forward Clint Dempsey is undergoing tests and evaluations for an irregular heartbeat.
General Manager Garth Lagerwey said that the team had been monitoring the condition for a while, but new developments meant that Dempsey needed additional evaluation. No other details have been revealed, but the club confirmed that Dempsey won’t be available for Sunday’s road game in Portland.
Dempsey, 33, is in his fourth season with the Sounders and has eight goals and two assists this year. He is also a stalwart of the U.S. men’s national team and helped the Americans reached the semifinals of the Copa America Centenario tournament earlier this summer.
Spenser Davis also covers the Sounders for Sounder at Heart.
