Fredy Montero named MLS player of the week

Fredy Montero has been MLS Player of the Week, two days after the Sounders FC forward scored two goals in Seattle’s 2-1 win against the Chicago Fire.

It is the second such award for Montero, who was also the MLS’s Player of the Month in July.

In other Sounders news, the team announced Monday that forward Sanna Nyassi has been called in by the Gambia National Team for an African Cup of Nations qualifying match Saturday in Banjul, Gambia.

Nyassi will miss matches against Chivas USA on Wednesday and the New England Revolution on Saturday before returning to the team on Sept. 6.
