If Seahawks don’t draft a QB, what should their first 4 picks be?

It seemed like a sure thing that the Seahawks would be drafting a quarterback early in next April’s draft given they have two picks in each of the first two rounds, but Geno Smith is playing like a Pro Bowler and could wind up with a new contract with Seattle.

If the Seahawks do commit to Smith beyond this season, what should the start of the 2023 NFL Draft look like for the Seahawks? That’s the question Mike Salk had for former NFL quarterback Brock Huard during Wednesday’s Brock and Salk on Seattle Sports 710 AM.

“If they do sign Geno and they don’t need to get a quarterback and they’ve got four picks in the first two rounds, if the draft were right now, what would you use those first four picks on?” Salk asked.

The Seahawks’ first pick figures to be an early one as the Denver Broncos have struggled mightily after giving Seattle a number of high draft picks for Russell Wilson. If the draft were right now, the Hawks would have the seventh overall pick, courtesy of Denver.

“Top 10 pick would be the biggest, strongest, baddest defensive lineman,” Huard said. “I don’t care if he’s an end or a tackle, you get me just a game-changer physically and an impact-maker that can move another human being.”

What about the second first-rounder, which is currently near the end of the first round as the Seahawks lead the NFC West?

“Behind that would be a linebacker,” Huard said. “I love what Jordyn Brooks is doing, but they need more depth there. Whether that’s a strongside linebacker, whether that’s another inside linebacker, give me a guy that can run sideline to sideline and that can shock and shed, can get people off of them and make an impact.”

So what about the second round?

“After that would probably be a safety,” Huard said.

Pro Bowl free safety Quandre Diggs “isn’t getting any younger,” Huard said, and typical starting strong safety Jamal Adams is out for the year.

“(Ryan) Neal has been a nice addition, but give me a ball-hawking safety,” Huard said. “And there’s actually as I look at the top-50 (draft prospects) or so, I think there’s some impact safeties in this draft.”

And with the Seahawks’ second second-round pick, Huard wouldn’t mind seeing the Hawks take another running back. He also said he wouldn’t mind that happening in the third or fourth rounds, either.

“I’ll get mocked for this and people will laugh at it and maybe it’s a third rounder or fourth rounder — give me another running back if there’s a another running back that falls late to the second round,” Huard said. “Because this league still thinks you don’t need running backs … The cycle is going to shift and change as they look at the impact that young players have at that position.”

Huard also said an offensive lineman, especially on the interior, would make sense with one of the Seahawks’ first four picks, too.

Salk thinks the Seahawks would be wise to use an early pick on a wide receiver, which Huard didn’t think was a bad idea.

“Receiver would not bother me at all. Tyler Lockett is getting older and DK Metcalf is kind of by himself out there (at times),” Salk said. “Yeah, I wouldn’t mind seeing a wide receiver taken with (the Seahawks’) second first-round pick or second-round pick or something like that.”
