It’s been a while since we’ve seen a quality baseball movie, and if the reason is because screenwriters have run out of unique trick plays for pivotal scenes, Mariners first baseman Ty France has something to show them.

Lineups for first home playoff game in Seattle in 21 years

France pulled off one of the more unbelievable double plays you’ll ever see in the fifth inning of Saturday’s American League Division Series matchup with the Houston Astros at T-Mobile Park.

With no outs and Houston catcher Martín Maldonado on first base, Astros leadoff man Jose Altuve hit a broken-bat popup to France right near the bag at first. France, showing boxing out skills that would make a basketball power forward proud, hauled in the popup while also getting just enough in Maldonado’s way to prevent him from stepping on the base. The two were touching as France made the catch, and the first base umpire was all over it, calling Maldonado out.

The play helped Mariners starting pitcher George Kirby breeze through another inning, as he retired the next batter to finish his fifth scoreless frame of the game to keep the M’s and Astros tied.

It’s a must-win situation for Seattle, which lost the first two games of the best-of-five series at Houston. You can listen to the game on Seattle Sports 710 AM with the Mariners Radio Network broadcast featuring Rick Rizzs, Aaron Goldsmith, Dave Sims and Mike Blowers.
