Mariners make 2 trades, acquire switch pitcher Pat Venditte

The Mariners made a couple of additions to their pitching staff on Saturday morning, trading players to be named to Pittsburgh and Toronto to acquire Arquimedes Caminero and the ambidextrous Pat Venditte.

Blake Parker and Donn Roach have been designated for assignment by Seattle to make room for the new pitchers on the 40-man roster.

The Mariners made waiver claims on the two players, as it is necessary for players to go through the waiver wire to be traded now that the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline has passed.

Caminero, 29, made 39 relief appearances for the Pirates this season. He was 1-2 with one save and a 3.51 ERA. The Mariners agreed to send one player to be named and another conditional player to be named to Pittsburgh in the transaction.

Venditte, the first known full-time switch pitcher in MLB history, will report to Triple-A Tacoma. He maintained a 5.19 ERA with seven strikeouts and four walks in eight relief appearances with Toronto this season. He has played in 25 games, including two starts, with Triple-A Buffalo this season. The 31 year old made his major league debut last year with Oakland.

Parker and Roach both spent most of the season in Tacoma but had short stints with the Mariners.

The moves left one spot open on Seattle’s 25-man roster, which allowed them to activate Taijuan Walker, who is scheduled to start Saturday night, from the 15-day disabled list following his recovery from right foot tendinitis.
