Mariners DH Kyle Lewis to 7-day IL, IF Abraham Toro reinstated

The Mariners will wait until at least the end of this week to get Kyle Lewis back.

Lewis, the 2020 American League Rookie of the Year, was placed on the Mariners’ seven-day concussion injured list Wednesday afternoon prior to the second game of Seattle’s three-game series in Baltimore. Lewis hasn’t played since Saturday when a pitch ricocheted off his shoulder and hit him in the head. While Lewis initially stayed in the game, he was replaced by a pinch-hitter before his next at-bat.
The move with Lewis is retroactive to Sunday, May 29, meaning he could be back by next week if he has recovered by then.
Taking Lewis’ place on the Mariners’ active roster is infielder Abraham Toro, who was on the 10-day IL with a left shoulder sprain.
Lewis, 26, has played just four games this season for Seattle since finishing a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. He suffered a torn meniscus in May 2021 and had to work his way back from reconstructive surgery on his right knee, which is the same knee he underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in 2016 and suffered a bone bruise during 2021 spring training that kept him out for most of the first month of last season.
This season, Lewis is 4 for 15 (.267) with two home runs. The Mariners won both games he homered in last weekend.
The 25-year-old Toro was placed on the injured list on May 22. He had a quick rehab stint with Single-A Everett in a doubleheader Monday night, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a walk. In 38 MLB games with the Mariners this year, he has a .179/.237/.366 slash line for a .603 OPS with six home runs, five doubles, 13 RBIs and 16 runs scored.
A trade acquisition last July from Houston, Toro has played 17 games at second base, nine at third, one at first and 10 at designated hitter this season, which is his fourth in the big leagues.
Toro is not in the lineup for Thursday’s 4:05 p.m. game between the Mariners (21-28) and the Orioles (21-30). Coverage starts on Seattle Sports Station 710 AM with the pregame show at 3 p.m. Here is the Mariners’ lineup.
