Mariners’ Robinson Cano eliminated in first round of Home Run Derby

Robinson Cano’s bid to win a second Home Run Derby was short-lived thanks to a monster performance from Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton, the eventual champion.

The Mariners second baseman hit seven homers in the first round Tuesday at San Diego’s Petco Park. That wasn’t nearly enough to advance after Stanton hit a whopping 24.

The video above shows Cano’s longest homer, which Statcast estimated at 452 feet.

MLB seeded participants for the Derby based on first-half home-run totals. That meant a tough first-round draw for the fourth-seeded Cano against the fifth-seeded Stanton, one of baseball’s premier power hitters. Stanton cruised past Cano in the first round, edged former Mariner and current Oriole Mark Trumbo 17-14 in the semifinals then beat defending champion Todd Frazier of the White Sox 20-13 in the final round. Stanton’s 61 home runs in all shattered the previous Derby record of 41.

Cano won the event in 2011 and also competed the next two seasons. He’ll play in tonight’s All-Star Game at 5, which you can hear on 710 ESPN Seattle.
