The Seahawks came away with a much-needed 30-23 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak, but it did come at the cost of some key players getting banged up.

Rost’s Takeaways: Seahawks-49ers still delivers primetime drama

During the victory over the 49ers, which gave the Seahawks a sweep of their division rival for the second season in a row, star safety Jamal Adams missed the entire second half with an injury. Two offensive linemen left the game with injuries, as well.

During his weekly visit with Mike Salk on 710 ESPN Seattle, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll gave injury updates on Adams and the offensive line.

Jamal Adams

Adams, who missed four games with a groin injury in 2020, played through a number of other injuries as well, including to his shoulder and fingers. He underwent multiple surgeries last offseason to repair the injured fingers as well as a torn labrum in his shoulder, and unfortunately for Adams, he re-injured that same shoulder in the second quarter against the 49ers.

“I don’t know a whole lot more than he had an issue with the shoulder, the one that was repaired and we’ll know more by the end of the day,” Carroll said.

If Adams is out for any length of time, Ryan Neal will take over at strong safety alongside free safety Quandre Diggs, who recorded his fourth interception of the season in Sunday’s win.

OL takes a beating

The Seahawks were already down one starter heading into Sunday’s divisional matchup as starting left guard Damien Lewis was injured and inactive for the second game in a row.

Kyle Fuller, who started the season as Seattle’s starting center, got his second start in a row at left guard in place of Lewis, but Fuller went out with what Carroll after the game called an ankle sprain. That prompted undrafted rookie free agent Jake Curhan to get extended playing time at left guard despite offensive tackle being his natural position. That was necessary because Lewis’ usual backup, Jamarco Jones, is on injured reserve and guard Phil Haynes was inactive as a healthy scratch.

Fuller wasn’t the only starting linemen injured, either, as starting right tackle Brandon Shell got hurt in the second half, pushing rookie sixth-round pick Stone Forsythe into his first taste of NFL action.

Carroll had some quick updates on Fuller and Shell Monday morning.

“For Kyle Fuller, it was not an ankle sprain,” Carroll said. “It’s a calf contusion just above his ankle, so that’s a good sign that should help him return soon.”

For Shell, he aggravated an injury that’s been nagging him for much of this season.

“Brandon, he’s just battling with a sore shoulder,” Carroll said. “He loses some power during the game when he’s banging away. We’ll have to see how he does. We may have to take care of him (by resting him) this week, but I don’t know that yet.”

Carroll also gave a positive update on Lewis, who hasn’t played since the Seahawks took on the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11 but could return next Sunday against Houston.

“Damien has a chance to come back (this week),” Carroll said. “This was two weeks of him being off for his shoulder and his elbow and we should have a legit shot to get him back.”

Carroll praised the jobs that rookies Forsythe and Curhan did when called upon to help the team in a close game.

“It was great for those guys to play in it and contribute in a winning game, and they battled,” he said. “Stone Forsythe goes in the game (at right tackle) and he’s staring over there at that monster (49ers defensive end Nick Bosa) right off the bat and he handled it well. He got through it and did just fine.”

Carroll said Curhan also did a nice job, especially considering he’s an offensive tackle and not a guard.

“He jumped in there and played left guard for us and survived it,” Carroll said. “They’ll play better, but they had a great first experience in a real crucial situation so they’ll only be better for that.”

If Shell is out this week like Carroll said may be the case, Curhan or Forsythe are the likely candidates to start at right tackle when the Seahawks take on the Texans.

Booster Shot Monday

The Seahawks didn’t have any positive COVID-19 tests during the 2020 season, and they really have had just one incident with COVID-19 this season when tight end Gerald Everett missed two weeks due to protocol. Seattle is one of the most vaccinated teams in the NFL and it sounds like most of the team will be using Monday to get booster shots.

“Our guys are going through and getting their boosters today,” Carroll said. “Really happy there’s a lot of energy around the building because there’s a lot of guys getting their stuff done. And for the people that are thinking about it, know that your Seahawks are taking care of business here and we’re trying to get everybody to be as healthy as you possibly can.”

The vaccines and booster shots can often hit people hard for roughly a day, so Carroll said that the team is getting its shots done Monday so “hopefully we’ll be OK by Wednesday.”
