Wyman: Why Tre Brown convinced Seahawks to break their CB mold

May 19, 2021, 12:34 PM

The Seahawks raised some eyebrows with their fourth-round selection of Oklahoma cornerback Tre Brown in the 2021 NFL Draft. Not because of his position, but because of Brown’s size.

Wyman’s Observations: Standouts from Hawks rookie minicamp

Seattle has been known for its preference of tall corners with long arms, and the 5-foot-10 Brown doesn’t fit that bill. But as 710 ESPN Seattle’s Dave Wyman explains, Brown’s play is what really matters to the Seahawks.

“This is from the horse’s mouth, that the whole tall corner thing was never really a thing that was exclusive just to the Seahawks and (it wasn’t) that they were only going to take those kinds of guys,” the former NFL linebacker and current Seahawks Radio Network color commentator said in the latest edition of Football 101. “Yeah, they’d like to have taller corners, no question about it, but it’s not like they wouldn’t select a guy like Tre Brown just because he’s 5-10 instead of 6-2.”

And that’s because Brown showed throughout his college career that he’s built for big moments, making huge plays late in the three most recent Big 12 championship games that can be directly pointed to as leading Oklahoma to conference title victories.

Oklahoma DC Alex Grinch: Tre Brown has knack for big moments

“I don’t know if this is a quality or not, but some guys have an ability to make big plays at key moments. They just show up in those occasions,” Wyman said, adding that he saw someone mention that a statue of Brown should be erected outside of AT&T Stadium in Dallas, where the Big 12 championship game is held. “He’s made big plays every year and helped them win the Big 12 championship.”

Wyman saw Brown up close at Seahawks rookie minicamp last weekend and was impressed, so in this edition of Football 101, he puts three plays by Brown under the microscope, including two of his Big 12 title stops and a highlight from the 2020 Senior Bowl. Watch it all in the video at the top of this post.
