Video: Mariners score 14 straight runs in epic comeback win

Aug. 5, 2001 is a day that lives in infamy for the Seattle Mariners. Leading the Cleveland Indians 14-2 after 6 1/2 innings, the Mariners allowed 12 runs over three innings and eventually fell victim to the most improbable of comebacks as Cleveland scored a run in the 11th to win 15-14.

On Thursday night, nearly 15 years later, the Mariners franchise entered their version of an epic comeback into the history books.

Seattle erased a 12-2 deficit and in fact one-upped the 2001 Indians, scoring 14 straight runs – including nine in the seventh inning – to stun the San Diego Padres for a 16-13 win. By comparison, the Indians scored 13 straight in their comeback, and they didn’t plate any more than five in a single inning.

The Mariners, who lead the MLB in home runs, had some help from the longball in the form of Dae-Ho Lee’s towering three-run shot in the sixth, but it was stringing singles together that ultimately got the job done. In the nine-run seventh, they had eight hits, all of which were singles – including seven in a row with two outs.

The Mariners may not have erased their infamous 2001 loss from the record books, but on Thursday night they wrote a brand new chapter that could very well overshadow it.
