Wyman: If Seahawks spend money on O-line, it should be for Corey Linsley

With the start of the new NFL year and the opening of free agency less than three weeks away, 710 ESPN Seattle’s Wyman and Bob have been taking a close look at the free agent class as it pertains to the Seahawks.

O’Neil: Middle ground for Wilson, Hawks only getting harder to find

On Thursday, hosts Bob Stelton and Dave Wyman focused in on the offensive line, an area that may be the top priority for the Seahawks this offseason.

Two positions are of particular importance: right guard and center. That’s because left guard Mike Iupati, who was already set to be a free agent, announced his retirement earlier this week, and center Ethan Pocic could parlay an impressive year at center for Seattle into a payday in free agency.

Should the Seahawks decide to spend a good chunk of the limited amount of available money they’ll have under a shrinking salary cap for 2021 on an offensive lineman, Wyman said (as you’ll hear in the video below) it should be Corey Linsley, who at 29 years old enters free agency after earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2020, which was his seventh season with Green Bay.

When asked by Stelton if center was the spot to spend at, Wyman agreed, partially because Seattle is set at right guard after a strong rookie season by 2020 third-round pick Damian Lewis.

“I feel like you’ve got a good, solid guard on the other side, and this is the connection to Russell,” Wyman said about the center position. “You want a guy that’s going to be able to call out the line count and make adjustments for the blocking scheme, things like that.

“I like Corey Linsley. I would be fine spending $8-9 million of the Seahawks’ salary cap on this guy, but they’re going to have to work some things out.”

You can listen to the full conversation about offensive linemen who are entering free agency in this podcast from Wyman and Bob’s show on Thursday beginning around the 35:30 mark.
