Pete Carroll Show: Seahawks’ surging defense could be without Tre Flowers, Carlos Dunlap vs Giants

The Seahawks’ defense has put together three strong performances in a row, and Seattle getting all of its key players together on the field long enough to grow comfortable in their roles is a big reason why.

There’s a high likelihood that the defense will have to turn to some of its depth when the New York Giants come to town on Sunday, however.

During Friday’s edition of The Pete Carroll Show on KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, the Seahawks coach indicated that starting cornerback Tre Flowers and starting defensive end Carlos Dunlap are in question to play in the Week 13 game.

Flowers, who has started seven games and is the only Seahawks cornerback to play all 11 games thus far this season, has been held out of practice this week with a hamstring injury and sounds like a long shot for Sunday.

“Tre’s got a hamstring that’s bothering him. It’s gonna be a challenge for him to make it back,” Carroll told Dave Wyman. “Playing those sprinter positions you need it all, so that’s (going to go) all the way to game time before we can get an update, see if he has a chance.”

With Dunlap, Carroll said the Seahawks won’t know until Sunday if a foot injury that took him out of Monday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles will prevent him from playing. The arrival of Dunlap, who has four sacks in four games with Seattle, has coincided with a significant improvement for Seattle’s pass rush

“Carlos has a sore foot that he may be able to play with. We’ll have to see,” Carroll said. “He’s determined to play and all that. We’ll find out as we get to game time, really.”

Seattle is otherwise relatively healthy heading into the weekend, with Carroll mentioning that reserve offensive lineman Jordan Simmons is set to return after being inactive Monday, and cornerback D.J. Reed, who was limited to special teams action against the Eagles, is ready to see more action.

“We’re in pretty good shape. We’re hoping to keep on this edge on staying healthy. It will really make a difference for us,” Carroll said.

You can hear The Pete Carroll Show at 8:15 a.m. each Friday during the football season on Seattle’s Morning News.

Sunday’s game between the Seahawks (8-3) and Giants (4-7) from Lumen Field will air live on KIRO FM and 710 ESPN Seattle. The pregame show will begin at 10 a.m., and kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m.
