Felix Hernandez has been scratched from his scheduled start Friday night against the Angels due to illness, the Mariners announced via Twitter.

Hisashi Iwakuma will be bumped up a day to start in Hernandez’s place.

Mariners manager Scott Servais told members of the media before Friday’s game that Hernandez has some form of the flu or a cold, and that the hope is that he will be able to pitch Saturday’s 6:05 p.m. game in Anaheim.

Hernandez, 30, has made three starts this season. He is 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 20 strikeouts over 18 innings pitched. He is also one strikeout from becoming the franchise’s all-time strikeout leader, as he is currently tied with Randy Johnson at 2,162 punchouts in a Mariners uniform.

Friday will be the fourth start of the year for Iwakuma, 35, who is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 15 strikeouts in 18 innings. He will be pitching on the regular four days of rest as the Mariners were off Monday, one day after his last start.

The series opener in Anaheim against the Angels is set for 7:05 on 710 ESPN Seattle, with the pregame show beginning at 6.
