Seahawks give second-round tender to Doug Baldwin

The Seahawks have placed a second-round tender on restricted free agent Doug Baldwin.

The move, first reported Friday afternoon by Brian McIntytre and then confirmed by Baldwin himself via Twitter, amounts to what should be a significant raise for the wide receiver as well as protection against losing him.

The second-round tender is for one year and it carries a value of $2.187 million, nearly four times what Baldwin made on the final year of his rookie deal. Baldwin is free to negotiate with other teams, but the Seahaws have the right to match the terms of whatever contract he agrees to. If they do, Baldwin stays in Seattle. If they don’t, the Seahawks receive the other team’s second-round pick as compensation.

The Seahawks and Baldwin can also agree to a long-term deal.

Baldwin, 25, was Seattle’s second-leading receiver in 2013, his third season after signing with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2011. Baldwin has since emerged as one of the league’s best slot receivers, and he showed the ability to play outside as well last season.

Earlier Friday, the Seahawks announced one-year deals with safety Jeron Johnson and offensive lineman Lemuel Jeanpierre, two backups who are also restricted free agents. Johnson was also given a second-round tender.
