LISTEN:

Joe Buck knows all about the petition. The FOX Sports lead NFL announcer just doesn’t understand what he did to upset so many Seahawks fans.

“I don’t know, I pretty much pulled a groin when they beat Denver in the Super Bowl, so I guess it wasn’t enough, but somehow I don’t like Seattle now,” Buck told “Brock and Salk” Wednesday. “They’re on the list with Green Bay, San Francisco and Kansas City – the list is growing and it grows over two sports.”

FOX’s No. 1 play-by-play team of Buck and Troy Aikman will be calling Sunday’s Seahawks vs. Panthers game, which Buck calls “the compelling matchup of the weekend.” The duo has called multiple Seahawks games this season, but an online petition calling for a ban on them covering future Seattle games grabbed headlines following the Seahawks’ narrow Week 8 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

The only problem with that: Thom Brennaman was working that game with Aikman, because Buck was calling the World Series.

“I blame (Brennaman),” Buck joked.

The petition had 18,700 supporters, with a goal of 19,000 by Jan. 20, as of Thursday morning.

“Thank God petitions aren’t effective or Troy and I wouldn’t be doing the game,” Buck said.

Despite the negativity, Buck says he thinks such a caring fan base is a “good thing” and that fans need to hear a certain level of support for their team.

“I’m glad that people care,” he said. “First of all, I’m glad that they know I’m there, whether they think I’m Thom Brennaman or Thom Brennaman [is] me. I’m glad that they know that somebody in the booth has an opinion and it is a different presentation then what you guys give on the day of the game.”

Buck has spent years as a hometown broadcaster for the St. Louis Cardinals, giving those fans every play, pitch and home run from a Cardinals’ fan perspective. He thinks the local commentary is a necessary part of the equation.

“That’s the place that’s buttering your bread and that’s how you want people to hear it, and I think that’s a good thing – they care and they want to hear it their way,” Buck said. “But when we show up it’s like, hey … why is he being critical of whoever – (Jermaine) Kearse. ‘Why is he not seeing my team is great no matter what they do?’ And that’s just not my job.”

Buck said he appreciates the Seahawks’ run of success and that he and Aikman “love” the organization and visiting Seattle.

“While I appreciate how great they are and, God, we love being around Seattle – from the organization to the city – you have to be honest sometimes and people don’t want to hear that from an outsider,” he said. “If the hometown guy does it or if their buddy does it on the couch it’s one thing. When the outsider does it, they want to kill you.”
